As the NFL football and UCI Cyclocross seasons come to a close, so do the Early Bird Training Series. In no way am I saying that a low-key training race comes close to the attention that the Superbowl receives, or the World Cyclocross Championships should get. No, instead I’m talking about our wrapping up the 26th year of the Early Bird training races so early in the year. In that regard, Northern California is the perfect setting for such an early start to the bicycle racing season.
For the five-week series 1610 new and experienced racers
came out to learn new skills and practice up on racing again in close
quarters. Acquiring or dusting off the
fundamentals of bicycle racing at shoulder to shoulder with peer competitors at
30 miles per hour takes time. Even if
these skills are second nature to some, the variables are many and the skills
should never be taken for granted.
Here’s the numbers:
As the leader of this series I’d like to extend thanks
first to the directors who help to create and execute the five-weeks curriculum
= John Cheetham, Laurel Green, Matt McNamara and Dan Smith. Next, I’d like to thank the leaders and
mentors that help to create a welcome and warm “experience” for the new racer. As an all-volunteer team we are doing some
amazing things. Thank you to Robert Liebold for his 40 years of promoting Nor Cal events! Finally, thank you to
the new and experienced racers that continue to come out to this series. You’re willingness to take the time to listen,
practice and be patient with your acquisition of new skills will be appreciated
by your peers and loved ones.
Good luck in your 2013 races. Cheers, Larry Nolan, on behalf of the all
Early Bird mentors
